Tennis players learn Muay Thai at Thailand Open 2009

Top tennis stars Gilles Simon of France, John Isner of USA and Robby Ginepri of USA got some hands (and legs) on experience with Thai martial arts at the PTT Thailand Open 2009 tennis tournament yesterday.

Tennis players learn Muay Thai

The three players were treated to an up close demonstration of sword fighting and Muay Thai before donning their boxing shorts and getting amongst the action themselves. The three received lessons in the Thai kick-boxing from Olympic champion Somjit Jongjorhor, much to the delight of the local crowd.

Ginepri, who is known to have a passion for the traditional martial art, displayed some excellent moves in his boxing bout with Jongjorhor.

Simon, Isner and Ginepri all play their second round matches at the tournament today.

Bryan Robson Thailand's new soccer manager

Bryan Robson has agreed to a four-year deal to become Thailand's new manager, the head of the country's FA has announced.

Bryan Robson in Thailand

The 52-year-old will fill the vacancy left by former incumbent Peter Reid, who departed by mutual consent 12 months into a four-year contract to take up the post of assistant manager at Stoke after being told he could not split his time between England and the south-east Asian nation.

Robson's immediate task in his first foray into international management will be to build on the good work done previously by Reid and guide the nation to a place in the Asian Cup finals in Qatar in 2011, with Thai FA chief Worawi Makudi also targeting a place at the 2014 World Cup.

"He's agreed to become coach, he's very happy with what we've offered him," Worawi told reporters.

"It's a four-year deal. The plan is he'll coach Thailand for the Asian Cup, the Olympics and hopefully the World Cup, too."

Robson's previous managerial experience has included spells at Middlesbrough, Sheffield United, Bradford and West Brom.

It remains unclear how much time he will spend in the country and whether he will continue his role as global ambassador for former club Manchester United.
Thailand are currently third in Asian Cup Qualifying Group E with two points from two games following draws with Jordan and Iran.

Thai women win Asian Volleyball Championship

Thailand's women's volleyball team made a big surprise as they beat China 3-1 in the final to win the 15th Asian Women's Volleyball Championship, held at the Quan Ngua Sport Palace in Hanoi, Vietnam yesterday.

Asian Women's Volleyball Championship

In a nail-biting match, Thailand came back from one set down to take their first-ever victory over volleyball powerhouse China with scores of 20-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-23 in the final of the 16-team tournament.

China are currently standing third in the world rankings, while Thailand stands at World No. 17.

In another match, Japan beat the Republic of Korea 3-0 to snatch the bronze medal. Kazakhstan defeated Chinese Taipei 3-0 to rank fifth while the hosts Vietnam downed Iran 3-0 for the second time to occupy the seventh position.

The achievement also earned Thailand a berth at the World Grand Champion Cup in November and the World Grand Prix next year.

Thai coach Kriatipong Ratchatakriangkai admitted that to defeat China, bronze medalist at last year's Olympic Games and 11-time Asian champion, was way beyond expectations.

Speedo unveils Fastskin LZR RACER Swimsuit - The World's Fastest Swim suit

Speedo, the world's leading swimwear brand, unveiled the special Olympic edition Team USA LZR ("Laser") RACER suit.

Only 1,000 of these limited edition swim suits will be available and they will be priced at $600, $50 more than the basic edition. That is pretty expensive!

Michael Phelps poses with the new Fastskin LZR Racer swimsuit in the photo below:

The new Fastskin LZR Racer is the latest iteration of the Fastskin series of swim suits. Made from an ultra lightweight, low drag, water repellent, and fast-drying fabric unique to Speedo called LZR Pulse, the LZR Racer suit is the world's first fully bonded competition swimsuit. The suit is ultrasonically welded which gives the effect of no seams at all. Ultra low drag LZR panels are laminated onto the base fabric to create a Hydro Form Compression System helping to compress the entire swimmer's body into a more streamlined shape and enabling them to cut through the water with more power and agility.

The LZR Racer suit has undergone tests in wind tunnels used by NASA to test the aerodynamic qualities of space shuttles.

These claims are impressive! The world's greatest swimmers continue to shatter the world records with the controversial new swim suit made by Speedo. In fact, at the time of writing this article, 46 world records have been smashed! The suit looks fast, and with swimmers like Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte, Natalie Coughlin, Leisel Jones, Park Tae-Hwan, and Kate Ziegler in them, I bet they will be the fastest swimsuits on the planet in Beijing during the 2008 Summer Olympics.

Some quotes from the Team US swimmers:
Michael Phelps: "When I hit the water, I feel like a rocket"
Ryan Lochte: "Putting on the suit kind of makes you feel like a super hero"
Grant Hackett: "It's the best yet"
Natalie Coughlin: "It feels incredible"
Libby Trickett: "It feels like I'm swimming downhill"

Seen in the photo below, the Thai Olympic swimmer Natthanan Jankrajang poses in a Speedo Fastskin LZR Racer suit. The Nation newspaper reports that the swimsuit has helped her improve her 25m freestyle timing from 12 to 11.4 seconds.

Speedo worked with legendary design house Comme des Garcons to develop a one-of-kind look for Team USA featuring the red, white and blue of the American flag. The design by visionary founder of Comme des Garcons, Rei Kawakubo, joins the distinctive metallic silver calligraphy that already appears on the suit. The calligraphy, painted by celebrated artist Inoue Yu-ichi, means 'kokoro' representing the heart, spirit and mind.

So what is Surface Drag?
Skin friction or surface drag is the force that tends to slow a swimmer down by means of the water passing along the surface of the suit and/or skin. As the characteristics of the water can't be changed the solution for the swimmer is to make the suit/skin as smooth as possible. Essentially the rougher the surface the more likely it is to 'grab' onto the water that is moving by. Greater body coverage with low frictional materials that don't restrict movement is required to reduce skin friction drag.

Some facts about the Speedo LZR RACER swimsuit:
- The Speedo LZR RACER suit has 10% less passive drag than Speedo's FASTSKIN FSII launched in 2004 and 5%* less passive drag than FASTSKIN FS-PRO (which has already resulted in 21 world records broken since its launch at the FINA Worlds Championships at Melbourne in March 2007).

- Strategically placed LZR Panels reduce skin friction drag by a massive 24% in comparison to Speedo's previous market-leading material, FASTSKIN - and an enormous 38% less drag than ordinary Nylon Lycra.

- The 100% bonded seams provide 6% less skin friction drag than a conventionally stitched or woven seam.

- The Speedo LZR RACER makes it easier to swim faster. In tests comparing LZR-RACER and training swimwear, Swimmers have up to 5% more efficiency in terms of their Oxygen intake - therefore requiring less effort for a given speed of swimming.

Tracking my weight loss with Gyminee

I began taking my weight loss & fitness more seriously since mid 2007, and I've been using this new social network website called Gyminee which focuses on health and fitness. Gyminee allows you to keep track and visualize your fitness progress and goals, workouts, monitor your diet, and it has lots of workout programs to follow (videos included) and share with your friends.

Gyminee also allows you to track your weight, waist size, nutrition, calories, protein intake, and much more. You can create your own workout plan or even join another member's workout plan. You can search for other members and add them as your Gym Buddies, or you can even join a Gyminee Group for extra motivation! It has a Locker Room where you can set and view your goals and progress visually in a colorful graph. It also has a cool iPhone/iPod Touch web application which you can use from your Touch to add your workout log through WiFi access.

The best thing about all this is that it is free! But it also has a pro version where you get more features like exporting your workout calendar to Google Calendar and more statistics and tools.

Since day one I've been using it frequently to enter my weight loss goal, workouts and favorite foods that I eat regularly which includes Thai Som Tam Salad. My favorite feature is the Body Tracker which displays a graph of my weight loss progress over a period of time, and also the Exercise Status ratings on the Locker Room which reminds me about the number of days I have exercised in the current week. I have lost almost 5 kgs since I started using Gyminee regularly from Jan 2008.

If you plan to get fit, lose weight, and get in shape I highly recommend Gyminee to stay motivated, have fun and get fit!

Mario Lopez, PEOPLE's Hottest Bachelor Talks Dating

Just voted as People magazine’s Hottest Bachelor, fitness buff Mario Lopez has a shocking confession to make. “I was a chubby baby. I looked like a sumo wrestler. My mom had to pull the folds apart when she bathed me!”

The exercise guru, who’s recently single following his split with Karina Smirnoff, says that a full slate of projects has kept him off the dating market - but that hasn’t completely stopped him from thinking about dating.

“I like a girl who’s from a modest sort of upbringing, because it’s more relatable,” he says, explaining what he looks for in a potential girlfriend.

“I’m a first-generation American. My parents [Elvia and Mario Sr.] emigrated from Mexico and live in the same house I grew up in Chula Vista, California. I’d feel weird if the girl was a little too uppity or affluent, because I’m a very down-home kind of guy,” tells Mario.

And for the lucky ladies who do manage to land a date, expect to be flexible.

“I like to go to a place in Korea town in L.A. where they have private karaoke,” he says of his favorite date activity. “It’s a great place to bring a girl and see how she reacts. If she rolls with the punches and has a good time, then I’m like, ‘All right, this girl is cool!’”

The Hottest Bachelor Mario Lopez is out promoting his new book titled "Mario Lopez's Knockout Fitness" in New York.

Cock fight sign at Chatuchak Weekend Market

Here's a signboard that says "Fighting Cocks and Birds" in a small section of the Chatuchak Weekend Market, Bangkok where some of the finest and toughest cocks used to fight one another, while being cheered by some serious and amused spectators.

Cock Fighting is an ancient sport in Thailand which was said to be popular since Ayutthaya was the capital of the Thai Kingdom of Siam.

After the Bird Flu Outbreak in Thailand a few years ago Thailand imposed tough restrictions on the transport of fighting cocks, which travel around the country for their matches. The birds were given their own passports with a photo, certifying that they were healthy. But after the resurgence of bird flu in 2005, authorities banned cock fighting altogether, which drew strong protests from cock owners whose businesses suffered.

Nike or Adidas sneakers, which one to buy?

I've been looking around Bangkok for Nike and Adidas running shoes as my Puma is wearing out. I've been to Central Department Store, Robinson, The Mall, Seacon, Super Sports, Sports World, FBT Sports, and some other places too but I haven't found an impressive pair so I have yet to buy one. All these places have lots of running shoes but I don't see that much variety under Nike and Adidas. They also have lots of other brands like Reebok, Puma, Diadora, and stuff.

There was a "Adidas Grand Sale 2008" in Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in March but the sneakers there were not cool. I'm wondering if there is going to be a Nike grand sale somewhere. I am more impressed with Nike shoes now.

I have a list of sneakers below which I'm trying to locate but so far I have only been able to spot Nike Shox, Nike Air Max, and Adidas MegaBounce.

Below are some of my favorites:

Nike Shox Turbo VI

Nike Shox Turbo VI

Nike Air Max 180 III

Nike Air Max Turbulence

Nike Impax Tomahawk

Nike Shox Saya

Nike Shox Experience

Adidas MegaBounce 2008

Adidas Redwood Trail

Adidas Response Trail

Adidas Supernova Cushion

Olympic torch snatched in Bangkok

The Olympic torch was snatched from a relay runner after he passed on the flame to the next runner.

Christopher Benjakul asked that the snatcher return the torch back to him.
After he passed on the flame to the next runner, many people came to him and surrounded him. One of them snatched the torch from his hands. "Please, please return it to me because I had been waiting for this occasion for a long time and wanted to keep the torch as a souvenir for this splendid moment," he said.

Chris was a former television star before he was hit by a car driven by a drunk driver in an accident while he was working as a rescue worker of a foundation, when he stopped to help a woman who had broken down on the side of the freeway.

He showed reporters an empty box without the torch inside.
