Santa Claus cancels Bangkok chimney tour

This year December has been so hot in Bangkok that Santa Claus seems to have cancelled his Bangkok chimney tour, my socks were hanging empty so I decided to wear them instead. And I had to collect my Christmas present from the Christmas tree to keep merry.

November was much colder as everybody I know saved atleast 500 Baht on their electricity bills. Global warming and El Nino are getting very nasty, so I guess Santa is pretty happy with his American and European rides, except for the Santa who was knocked down unconscious by an object thrown at his face while he was riding on the back of a truck decorated as a sleigh just a week before Christmas. Whatever it was, it broke his nose and gave him a concussion and two black eyes like a Panda in the picture below.

King Naresuan Episode 3, where art thou?

King Naresuan 3 hasn't been released yet. Last time I checked the release date was supposed to be 5th December 2007, the King's birthday. I don't see any news of it anywhere, even the official movie website has disabled the news link, I guess they must've had some shooting delays. After the immense popularity of King Naresuan Episodes 1 and 2, I just can't wait to grab some cheese popcorn and watch this movie in a cinema.

Nokia E51 with WiFi

Nokia E51 is selling like hot cakes in Bangkok! The Thai price is 11,500 Baht which is pretty cheap for a phone with WiFi, 16 million colors, Bluetooth v2.0 with A2DP, 3G, Edge and all that stuff. Though it isn't as slim as the Nokia 6500 Classic, an extra 2.5 mm isn't that bad.

Tiny thumb-sized colorful bats discovered

Tiny bats were discovered this week at Wang Takian subdistrict in Chachoengsao province which were previously unknown to local residents.

Paitoon Tronglim, a 35-year-villager, told reporters that around 6pm on Monday, he found a group of strange bats with golden yellow fur along the bodies and black skin on the back of the wings.

The bat 's body size was about that of a human thumb, around four centimetres long. The length from wing tip to left tip when extended was about 20 centimetres.

The villager said he had earlier seen the bats flying around the area but this was the first time he had managed to capture two bat specimens after they hid inside a rolled banana leaf. He said that the colour of the bats was different from common varieties which are black or brown, and he wanted to know to what species the bats belong.

The Bumblebee Bat, also known as Kitti's Hog-nosed Bat, is the world's smallest species of bat at 30-40 mm in length and weighing approximately 2 grammes.

Thai Elections this Sunday, no booze no beer

Thai elections are up this Sunday, and it's time to stock up on beer and booze as no one is allowed to sell alcohol, to prevent both drunk voting and drunk driving. Probably half of Bangkok would be going back to their home up and down the country to cast their votes.

College dude with a Mickey Mouse tin

I've seen Disney merchandise on children, women, and even some men. Mickey Mouse t-shirts, bags, belts, coats, purses, and even a Mickey leather jacket. But this is the first time I'm seeing a young male university student walking around holding a Mickey Mouse tin on his way to college early in the morning. I wonder what's inside it maybe some chocolates? But it sure looked damn colorful!

It's a week before Christmas and maybe I'll get one of those for Christmas giveaways!

Green worm crawling up my pants

I dont know where it came from but as I lay in bed I found this small green caterpillar worm slowly finding it's way up my pants. oh not from the inside, from the outside luckily. It reminds me of those Unif Green Tea worm imee jotai adverts on tv.

It looks pretty cute and soft, but it moves so slowly that it makes me wonder why it has so many legs for.

Is there always light at the end of the tunnel?

There is usually light at the end of the tunnel, and to check this out I take a lonely walk down a Bangkok subway tunnel.

It's bright enough outside...

Still bright, as I approach the tunnel...

It's getting darker inside, but its quite cool in here, literally...

Wow it's pretty brightly lit and my hands are turning yellow now, but I can well see light at the end of the tunnel...

Hey light, here I come! Phew, that was quite a long tunnel for a pedestrian!

Hey there Khalilah

Hey there delilah is a pretty popular song, but you should check out Hey there Khalilah, its a really funny song!

Nok Air cancels its Bangkok-Bangalore route

Nok Air, the budget airline of Thai Airways International, is cancelling its daily Bangkok-Bangalore route, due mainly to aircraft non-availability and higher jet-oil prices.

This Friday the 23rd will see the final flight on the route.

The airline began its Bangalore run amid much fanfare. Although the airline says the route has been very successful, it is nonetheless cancelling it temporarily.

CEO Patee Sarasin said in a statement that several considerations had forced the company to reconsider its international operations, resulting in the suspension of this route despite a steadily increasing passenger-load factor.

Those considerations include an unexpected shortage of aircraft, increasing need for additional human resources and constant rises in the cost of jet fuel.

Patee said Nok Air always conducted extensive research before launching a route, whether international or domestic, in order to make sure it afforded the company a strategic advantage, strengthened its network and matched its revenue-generation plan. "There is absolutely no question Nok Air will continue to develop our network further, both domestically and internationally, to meet our overall business plan," said Patee.

He said to achieve and go beyond company expectations, as well as those of the passengers, Nok Air needed more aircraft and more human resources.

Nok Air has added another two leased aeroplanes and is in negotiations for additional aircraft.

The Economic Times reported Nok Air's passenger-load factor had fallen to 40 per cent.

"In India, international low-cost carriers take more time to turn a profit, but they withdraw their operations soon. Also, the return-fare difference - including taxes - between Nok Air and full-service carriers like Thai Airways is about 3,000-4,000 rupees [Bt2,600 to Bt3,400]. So Indian passengers prefer a full-service carrier to paying for food and blankets on Nok Air."

All passengers who have booked seats on the route for after this Friday will be transferred to Thai Airways.

Nok Air has not yet launched additional international routes as planned. It is set to fly to Ho Chi Minh City, Macau or Hong Kong, Madras, New Delhi and Hyderabad.

The airline will take delivery of four new aeroplanes this year and eight more next year.

Another low-cost carrier, Jetstar Asia, withdrew its five flights per week on the Bangalore-Singapore route, citing low passenger numbers.

Several low-cost airlines, such as AirAsia, are considering revising their pricing policy to use one price that includes airfare, fuel surcharge, insurance and other fees, instead of charging all of these separately, like at present.

Thai AirAsia CEO Tassapon Bijleveld said this would afford travellers greater convenience when making reservations.

"We've been monitoring the uncertain jet-oil prices," said Tassapon, adding that nothing had been decided yet.

Thai AirAsia has been offering one-price ticket sales through its website for certain domestic routes on a trial basis.

One-Two-Go has also been testing one-price ticket sales with all-inclusive Bt1,850 fares between Bangkok and Chiang Mai, Phuket, Surat Thani, Krabi, Chiang Rai, Hat Yai and Nakhon Si Thammarat. The offer will be effective from December 1.

Thanyarasmi Siraphatphakorn, Miss International Queen 2007

Thanyarasmi Siraphatphakorn, aka Nong Film was crowned Miss Tiffany Universe 2007 only a few months back. She does it again this year by winning a beauty pageant crown for transsexuals called the Miss International Queen 2007 in Pattaya on Saturday night.

The 4th annual Miss International Queen pageant was held in the beautiful city of Pattaya, Thailand on 5th -10th November 2007. Tanyarat Jirapatpakon was named Miss International Queen 2007 beating 29 other stunning contestants who had come to the Thai beach resort from different parts of the world. Tiffany's Show Pattaya runs the event and claims to be the world's largest transsexual cabaret.

Tanyarat's angelic white-beaded evening wear, fit for the grandest of galas, gave way to the more salacious floral pink bikini in the swimsuit competition, showing off her shapely legs and slim figure.

"Global warming is one of the most serious problems the world faces today," she said when asked how she helps educate people on environmental issues. "I tell them to 'think about it'. It's your world too," she said.

The crowd, consisting of mostly Thais and tourists, cheered loudly for the homegrown favorite. Thai transsexuals have slowly been leaving the cabarets for mainstream success in music and other platforms, helped by the popularity of beauty contests.

Mali the hippo's 41st birthday at Dusit Zoo

Mali the Hippo was the honoured guest at a grand birthday party last week, something she well deserves, as the second oldest resident of Dusit Zoo has produced nearly 14 children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren living in parks in Bangkok and abroad.

Hundreds of visitors to the Bangkok Dusit Zoo offered her their best wishes, as she turned 41, second only to an elephant who is four years her senior.

A press conference was held to announce the activities for four more days of celebration.

Mali arrived from the Tillberg Zoo in the Netherlands in 1967 when she was only two. She has a very big family spread not only over Thailand but also Laos and Malaysia. Her only company now is a granddaughter and great-grandson, Tua Daeng.

Mali has been the delight of Somphong Sawatnum, 44, a keeper who has tended the hippo from the very beginning. "Mali loves all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who have lived with her. I've seen her looking after her daughter while the daughter was giving birth. She obstructed others because she didn't want them to disturb her."

"Some visitors are fans of Mali's family. I've seen them visit very often and whenever they come here, they ask me about them," said Chalong Sripumma, 31, another zoo worker.

Kids seemed very satisfied when they saw Mali enjoying eating bread and a variety of fruits and vegetables provided for her birthday with her granddaughter, Makham. Mali also received praise from her animal colleagues, who formed a parade. The procession included lions, snakes and camels.

Zoo bosses arranged other activities for visitors, such as donating fruits and vegetables to Mali, getting in free if their name is Mali, viewing an exhibition about the hippo and writing a wish for her. Children under 10 were given a miniature hippo to take home.

Some Chinese tea in a Thai style glass

Stray dog barks at another across the road

Unlike humans, stray dogs can communicate with each other across a wide road. This Bangkok street dog stands tall.

I'm not a plastic bag, who am I?

Got this bag from Home Fresh Mart at The Mall Bangkapi. It says "I'm Not a plastic bag". It is made out of cloth, looks cool.

Flooded Bangkok streets, it rained really hard last week

It rained heavily in Bangkok last week and the week before that. Drizzling almost every day at different times of the day and night, the weather's been pretty gloomy. Many streets were flooded upto knee high in various parts of Bangkok thereby worsening the traffic situation. Lots of garbage floating around everywhere.

It was fun anyway to get the feet soaked in the cold water the next morning, walking through the floods at snail's pace.

Mouse glue trap worked, smart rats I must say

Some mice get smarter after seeing their friends get caught in a traditional mouse trap.
When it no longer works a glue trap will do the job but you gotta put some good bait such as prawns which the mice love. Since I ate all the remaining prawns at dinner, I had to get some bread put some jam on it and leave it on the centre of the trap.

The good part about the traditional trap is that you can set the rat free, but you need to go at least 3 miles away so that it does not visit your home again.
