Thailand blocks Google's BlogSpot.com entirely

The Thai government have blocked Google's most popular blogging site blogspot.com since the eveninh of Friday, 27th June, 2008. None of the Thai bloggers are able to access their blogs from Thailand. According to reports, the government were aiming at blocking only saturdayvoice.blogspot.com and a few other political related websites. I doing so, their technicians have blocked all of the sub-domains of blogspot.com which is accessed by millions of internet users around the world.

This means that I am not able to access my own blog since I live in Thailand, but luckily I'm able to publish posts since a different domain (blogger.com) is used to write and publish posts which is not blocked (yet). I just hope that the ban does not take effect longer than a week.

In April 2007, the Thai government had banned the world's most popular video-sharing website YouTube.com, after it had broadcast offensive videos critical of the country's King, and declined to take them off the site.

False Killer Whales washed ashore at Phuket's Racha Island

More than 30 False Killer Whales were stranded ashore off Koh Racha Yai island, Phuket province, 1 of them died. Marine officials, local villagers as well as some foreign tourists tried to rescue some of the whales by putting them on a trailer. See photos below.

Watch the YouTube video below.

Staff of the Racha Resort and Ban Raya Resort and foreign tourists yesterday evening tried to help a herd of whales apparently identified as False Killer Whales which came ashore at Batoh Bay at Racha Yai Island. They put some of them on a trailer to another side of the island for first aid and helped them swim back to the deep sea. The herd of whales were spotted at around 6pm yesterday by villagers. Over 30 whales came ashore due to big waves and winds. Seeing that the whales could not swim back themselves, villagers then notified hotels. 20 of them swam back to sea safely, while one died on the beach and 10 of them were carried to a calmer beach. It took marine biologists and locals over 3 hours to help and transfer them. One however was injured and was put in a rubber boat to release in deeper water.

A marine biologist from Phuket Marine Biological Centre, Kongkiat Kittipatanawong, said this is the first time that a large number of such whales have come ashore here. He suspected that the leader of the group must have misled them to shore. The big waves prevented them from turning back to sea. The biologist will still keep watch this morning, to ensure all of them return to the deep sea, while the dead whale would be sent for an autopsy.

Did the dog in the photo just eat the rat?

Did the dog in the photo just eat the rat? After looking at what appears to be the remains of a dead rat and from the way the white dog is staring at it, the dog seems to have enjoyed some rat meat for breakfast! The dog also has a personal yellow napkin to wipe off its mouth. I just hope that the rat was not poisoned.

Thai Toilet Safety Warning in Tinglish

I took photos of this humorous Tinglish Thai toilet warning sign at The Mall department store last Saturday that says "For your safety, do not step on the toilet seat!". It also says "Misusage can be injured." in the next line. This is the management's way of preventing ignorant people that squat by standing on the toilet seat cover.

Taipei International Food Show 2008

The Taipei International Food Show (Food Taipei 2008), organized by TAITRA (Taiwan External Trade Development Council) is being held at the newly opened Taipei World Trade Center Nangang Exhibition Hall from June 18th to June 21st.

The 3-in-1 show along
with the Taipei International Food Machinery and Technology Show (FoodTech Taipei) and the Taipei International Packaging Industry Show (Taipei Pack) brings operators from the upper, middle, and downstream segments of the island's food industry to the show arena.

Indeed, relocating the 3-in-1 show to the newly opened mega-showground helped contribute to more enthusiastic participation in this year's trade event, the largest in Asia's food industry, with guests of yesterday's opening ceremony lauding the double-digit growth in participants.

Of note is the fact several countries are showcasing their best cuisines at this year's show by organizing national pavilions, all located at the Food Taipei show arena on the 4th floor of the Nangang hall.

Malaysian National Pavilion will be one of the most exciting places to visit during the Taipei International Food Show. Besides many quality Malaysian exhibitors providing food products and services, there are also cooking demonstrations of various traditional Malay dishes, and best of all, you can taste for yourself all the mouthwatering dishes freshly made at the booth.

In order to help local Taiwanese companies understand Halal products and services and how their overseas markets can be expanded through Halal certification, related information is available in the information booth of the Malaysian National Pavilion. Particularly on June 21, a Halal workshop will be held in conference room 502 inside the Nangkang Exhibition Hall by the renowned Halal Journal.

Mario Lopez, PEOPLE's Hottest Bachelor Talks Dating

Just voted as People magazine’s Hottest Bachelor, fitness buff Mario Lopez has a shocking confession to make. “I was a chubby baby. I looked like a sumo wrestler. My mom had to pull the folds apart when she bathed me!”

The exercise guru, who’s recently single following his split with Karina Smirnoff, says that a full slate of projects has kept him off the dating market - but that hasn’t completely stopped him from thinking about dating.

“I like a girl who’s from a modest sort of upbringing, because it’s more relatable,” he says, explaining what he looks for in a potential girlfriend.

“I’m a first-generation American. My parents [Elvia and Mario Sr.] emigrated from Mexico and live in the same house I grew up in Chula Vista, California. I’d feel weird if the girl was a little too uppity or affluent, because I’m a very down-home kind of guy,” tells Mario.

And for the lucky ladies who do manage to land a date, expect to be flexible.

“I like to go to a place in Korea town in L.A. where they have private karaoke,” he says of his favorite date activity. “It’s a great place to bring a girl and see how she reacts. If she rolls with the punches and has a good time, then I’m like, ‘All right, this girl is cool!’”

The Hottest Bachelor Mario Lopez is out promoting his new book titled "Mario Lopez's Knockout Fitness" in New York.

Sidewalk repair in progress in Klong Toey

A Bangkok sidewalk repair work is in progress as cement is laid to patch up broken tiles and manholes. The pavement is entirely sandy and a bit wet from last night's heavy rain, which left many worms & centipedes homeless and forced evacuation of some of Bangkok's elite frogs.

Hippo Tattoo Picture Collection

Here are some pictures of hippo tattoos. The Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius), from the Greek ἱπποπόταμος (hippopotamos, hippos meaning "horse" and potamos meaning "river"), often shortened to "hippo", is a large mostly plant-eating African mammal. The hippos are better known for wallowing in swamps rather than their surfing skills.

Sinouk Coffee - Café Gourmet Lao

I bought this Sinouk Pure Arabica Instant Coffee from THAIFEX - World of Food Asia 2008, Bangkok. I was just bored of Nescafé Gold and needed a change of taste. This one tastes different and even better and is made in Vientiane, Laos PDR. I bought this coffee for 200 Baht after they offered a free tasting glass of the Sinouk fresh ground coffee at the booth which tasted amazing.

On the front cover (pictured above) the print says Freeze-Dried Instant Coffee, Café Gourmet Lao, Sinouk Gold, Pure Arabica.

On the back cover (pictured above) it says Sinouk Café Lao with the address and a lot of text in the Laos language. It also has a picture of Mr. Sinouk Sisombat, President of the Lao Coffee Association with his quote "Do share my passion for quality coffee". From his name he appears to be the owner of Sinouk Coffee which is a competitor to "Dao Heuang Lao Coffee" another major coffee brand from Laos.

Since I tasted too much coffee that day I had to skip the Dao Huang Lao Coffee booth, and just found out recently that this brand seems more popular!

New KFC Thailand website, where are the chickens?

The new KFC Thailand (Kentucky Fried Chicken) website looks really fancy and out of this world, but it's very slow and is too many clicks away from a chicken. It has a splash page where a chicken man with a cap performs a traditional "Thai wai" saying "Please choose language", but the English one isn't up so Thai is the only option available now.

Clicking on the Thai flag pops up a window in which you see cool humans being transported into a KFC alien spaceship that blasts off after a countdown. This leads to another world which is filled with all kinds of KFC product menus with a 1150 KFC satellite displaying live streamed images of KFC menu brochures on a giant screen. A new KFC song plays in the background which is catchy and funny, along with voices of people dining at a KFC outlet. All this took quite a long time to load and a I still couldn't find a chicken menu image, which was a few more clicks away.

The new website is too fancy but requires a lot of patience to find what items you are looking for before deciding to place an order by phone for delivery through 1150. The good old website was way better and faster with everything easily accessible with just 1 or 2 clicks, and it also had an English version.

Sudan Plane Crash - 120 feared killed

Reports from Sudan say dozens of people were killed when a Sudan Airways Airbus 310 veered off a runway at Khartoum's airport and burst into flames, Voice of America reported Wednesday.

At least 120 people were feared dead last night after a Sudan Airways plane carrying more than 200 passengers burst into flames shortly after landing at Khartoum airport. The flight, which had stopped at Amman en route from Damascus apparently veered off the runway after touching down in bad weather.

The Airbus 310 was engulfed in flames, but some passengers were reported to have escaped using the emergency slides before ambulances and fire engines reached the scene.

The airport's head of medical services, Major General Muhammad Osman Mahjoub, told Reuters: "There are 120 bodies and 97 survivors."

One passenger told Sudanese television the plane had tried to land "but then the captain told us we couldn't land because of bad weather". He said they then flew to the Red Sea city of Port Sudan and circled before returning to Khartoum an hour later. "When the pilot tried to land there was a crash," the passenger said.

At the time of the landing a dust storm in the Sudanese capital was restricting visibility, residents said.

Another passenger said the landing in Khartoum was "not normal" and described "an explosion in the right wing" two or three minutes after the plane landed.

A police spokesman, Muhammad Abdel Majid al-Tayeb, said that five bodies had been pulled from the wreckage, adding that about 100 people were safe, and an unspecified number in hospitals.

"There are missing passengers who could be still inside the plane, or who left the aircraft but did not inform officials that they were passengers," he said.

A Sudanese civil aviation spokesman said the pilot had been slightly injured and all but one of the crew had been found alive. Another police source said that 111 people were thought to have survived uninjured while 17 were being treated in hospital.

"The task of counting the survivors has been complicated because in the alarm and confusion they dispersed and some of them seem to have left the airport area," he added.

At its height, the fire, which was later put out, appeared to be consuming the fuselage and cockpit area. Television pictures showed emergency escape slides deployed at the side of the blazing aircraft.

There were conflicting reports as to the cause of the accident. The head of Sudanese police, Muhammad Najib, said the poor weather conditions had "caused the plane to crash land, split into two and catch fire". He added: "We believe that most of the passengers were able to make it out and escape with their lives."

But Youssef Ibrahim, director of Khartoum airport, told Sudanese TV the plane had "landed safely" and denied bad weather was responsible for the crash. "One of [the plane's] engines exploded and the plane caught fire," he said.

Sudan has a poor aviation safety record. In May, a plane crashed in a remote area of southern Sudan, killing 23 people, including key members of the southern Sudanese government. In July 2003, a Sudan Airways Boeing 737 plane en route from Port Sudan to Khartoum crashed soon after takeoff, killing all 115 people on board.

Mee Krob Rad Na Ham (ก๋วยเตี๋ยวราดหน้าหมี่กรอบแฮม)

This is one of my favorite Thai dishes and its called Mee Krob Rad Na Ham or ราดหน้าหมี่กรอบแฮม in Thai. Mee krob literally means "crispy noodles", and Rad Na that literally means "pour over the face". It is made with rice noodles (thin vermicelli), gain lan (kai-lan: a Chinese Broccoli/Kale) pork, ham, and a saucy gravy made of stock and tapioca starch poured over it. This is a common dish served in most Thai restaurants but this one comes with a Ham topping, the first time I found this combination in a restaurant in Bangkok. I had this for dinner near The Old Siam shopping mall near Phahurat.

Strong Earthquake rocks Taiwan, Philippines

A strong 6.4-magnitude earthquake rocked the northern Philippines and southern parts of Taiwan early Sunday, shaking houses and prompting authorities to order some people to leave their homes.

The quake struck at a depth of 22 kilometers (14 miles) under the seabed in the Philippines' Batanes Islands region at 0157 GMT, the US Geological Survey said.

A blogger from Taiwan The Taiwan Chronicles felt the apartment bounce and things falling off the shelf during the quake.

There were no immediate reports of any casualties or damage and no tsunami warning was issued.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology put the quake about 76 kilometres west of the Batanes town of Basco.

The quake was felt strongly in Basco but was barely noticed in the northern provinces of the Philippines' main island of Luzon, the institute said.

Batanes Governor Telesforo Castillejos said that some houses had cracks on their walls after the quake but there were no casualties reported so far.

There were some weaker aftershocks and residents in some coastal areas were told to evacuate their homes as a precautionary measure in case of a tsunami, he added.

"The quake was very strong," he said on ABS-CBN television. "It jolted the whole island. It rocked the island almost for a whole minute."

The quake was also felt in southern counties of Taiwan, where the Central Weather Bureau measured it at 6.8 on the Richter scale and at a depth of 46 kilometres.
