The lower house of Parliament voted 298 in favor of Somchai Wongsawat, while Democrat party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva, won 198 votes.

Somchai was the education minister and became the acting prime minister after Samak Sundaravej was disqualified from office last week when a Constitution Court found him guilty of violating the constitution.

61-year-old Somchai, a Nakhon Si Thammarat native, was married to Yaowapa, the younger sister of Thaksin Shinawatra.

He will take office once he is endorsed by His Majesty the King.
